We had heard it said that there was an engine on a column outside of a train station in Cologne, Germany. After making the detour into the centre of Cologne in Germany and walking around the city centre for about two hours, we were unable to find the engine. The engine had been erected in the 1930’s and thinking that the engine had probably long since being removed, we headed out of Cologne.
As we were departing the city centre we saw a sign for Deutz and thought we would take a look around. We travelled underneath a rail-bridge and as we rounded a bend in the road, the Deutz-Koln train station came into view and there low and behold stood the engine.
The engine stands on a column about 15 feet tall, it was erected in 1931as a memorial to Nicolaus August Otto 1832 – 1891 and Eugen Langen 1833 – 1895.
 Atmospheric engine on column
What is amazing is that the engine is complete. It is a second generation, single shaft slide-valve atmospheric engine. The size is hard to tell but it must be at least a 2 or 3 hp engine. Well worth a look if you are ever near Cologne. | | | |
